How
do I know if my case has merit?
The only way to know is to discuss your case with a lawyer.
Never accept the advice of insurance adjusters, whose job
is to keep you from collecting.
How
much money can I collect?
Your compensation will depend on a variety of factors, such
as the severity of the accident, your medical expenses, lost
wages, insurance coverage, and many others. It will be impossible
to evaluate your case properly for many months after the accident.
If a lawyer promises a specific amount of money or guarantees
an outcome, beware: you are likely to be disappointed.
If
you can’t trust your lawyer to tell it to you straight—bad
news as well as good—find another lawyer.

How
do I choose the right lawyer for my case?
This decision is critical: The success of your case will depend
on the skill and diligence of the lawyer you choose.
Some important questions to ask include:
·
What legal areas do you specialize in? —
A lawyer who practices in more than a few legal areas may
not have the expertise to successfully fight a personal injury
case.
· What is your experience in similar cases?
— Also ask how long the lawyer has been practicing in
personal injury law, and what experience he or she has in
your particular type of case.
· Are you willing to litigate? —
The threat of a court battle is a powerful incentive to insurance
companies to offer you a reasonable settlement. A lawyer who
refuses to go to court is unlikely to get the same results.
· Do you charge for expenses? —
While most personal injury lawyers operate on a “no
recovery, no fee” basis, some charge for expenses even
if the case is not successful. You could end up paying sizable
fees out of your own pocket.
· What is your success rate? —
Only a lawyer with a success rate of 98% or higher is likely
to get you the highest possible compensation.
· Can you accommodate my special needs and/or
my schedule? — Finally, if you have any special
needs, such as language barriers or a tight work schedule,
make sure the lawyer can accommodate them.
